About Elliot
I write from a flat in Bukit Merah and publish under the name LifeBeam.
My name is Elliot. I have lived at Blk 47 Silat Avenue for six years — long enough that the lift lobby smells familiar, the kopitiam auntie knows my order, and I can tell when rain is coming by the way the light dulls over the car park.
LifeBeam started as a private notebook and became this site. The name refers to something simple: a beam of light passing through a window, through leaves, through glass — and the small changes that passage produces. I am not a photographer or a philosopher. I am someone who pays attention to how evenings arrive in a particular place.
What I write here falls into a few categories: walks I take through Singapore's park connectors and neighbourhoods; observations from home — the curtain ritual at six, the lift lobby at dusk; and occasionally, harder notes about things I heard but did not see, written with as much honesty as uncertainty allows.
Before LifeBeam I kept everything in paper notebooks stacked in a drawer beside my bed. The pages are filled with light measurements — 6:04 pm, beam on sofa, curtain half — and overheard fragments from bus rides. Moving those notes online was not an act of ambition. It was an act of preservation. Paper fades. Websites, if maintained, last longer.
I work part-time as a copy editor for a small publishing house near Outram. The work suits me: correcting other people's sentences by day, writing my own imperfect ones by evening. I am not trained as a journalist and do not pretend to report news. When I write about something I heard from my window, I say so plainly and stop where my sight ended.
My flat receives afternoon sun through the kitchen window and evening sun through the living room. I have learned the annual calendar of these beams the way farmers learn seasons — not from charts but from repetition. May through July is the strong evening beam. November is the month when Chin Swee Road sounds carry farther than usual, though I cannot explain the acoustics.
I do not publish on a fixed schedule. An entry arrives when something worth recording happens, or when a memory returns with enough clarity to deserve a paragraph. Quality of attention matters more to me than frequency.
If you wish to reach me, use the contact form or write directly to [email protected]. I read everything and reply when I can.
Thank you for reading. The light here is ordinary, and that is precisely what makes it worth describing.
